Troop Introduction

The Kiwanis Club of Arlington chartered Troop 5 in March 1997 as a new unit in the Cross Timbers District of the Longhorn Council. The Troop currently has 28 active members in five patrols and looks forward to new scouts joining at any time. The Troop meets Monday evenings, from 7:30 to 9:00 pm, at The Montessori Academy - 3428 Arkansas Lane. Our meetings include Scout skills instruction, games, and planning for upcoming events.

Youth Leadership

Troop 5’s program is planned and directed by the youth membership through the Patrol Leaders' Council. The Senior Patrol Leader and other youth leadership are elected to 6-month terms of office. Youth leadership is under adult guidance.

Community Service

Troop 5 stresses all the points of the Scout Law and we work to build the character of the young men through giving back to our families, community, and faith. Whenever one of our Scouts leads a service project for his Eagle rank, the entire troop is invited to participate. Additionally, almost every other rank in Boy Scouting requires community service hours for advancement. And during the year, Troop 5 looks for other opportunities for service, such as helping with the Kiwanis Club pancake breakfast, assisting at the Montessori School's Fall Festival, celebrating Scout Sunday in February, and volunteering at Mission Arlington in December.

Outdoor Activities

Troop 5 believes that there's nothing left after you delete the "outing" from "Scouting". Troop 5 camps out the second full weekend of the month. The Troop's outdoor program is designed to provide the Scouts with fun, new skills, and advancement.

Summer Camp

Troop 5 goes to a weeklong stay at Boy Scout Summer Camp every year. For 2010, we went to Buffalo Trail Scout Ranch in the Davis Mountains of west Texas. In past years, we have gone to other camps such as Camp Wehinahpay Scout Ranch in New Mexico and to Worth Ranch here in the Longhorn Council. We try to alternate one year "in council" and the next year "out of council". Summer Camp 2011 will be at Worth Ranch here in the Longhorn Council.

High Adventure

Troop 5 generally does two high adventure treks per year; a week long one in July and a 4 day one in December. In December, the trek will be a 20 mile backpack trip. In July 2011, we went to Sea Base in Florida, which was also the trek in 2005. In 2006, the Troop sent a crew to summit Mount Phillips in New Mexico. In 2008, the high adventure event was a trip to the Philmont Scout Ranch, also in New Mexico. Extra commitment for boys participating in the High Adventure Program is expected for preparation for these types of camping experiences.

How to Join

We are always interested in having prospective members check out our program before joining. Come visit! Contact Greg Shugart, Scoutmaster, at (817) 480-2814.

Troop 5 Fun Facts

  • By focusing on this program we have produced 20 Eagle Scouts since 1997!
  • Troop 5 started out in the Cross Timbers District of the Longhorn Council. Redrawn district lines moved us to the Tejas District for a number of years. But in 2009, the Council re-drew it's district lines again, which moved Troop 5 back to Cross Timbers District! Full circle!
  • Troop 5 has had only two Scoutmasters since it's inception.

We are sponsored by The Kiwanis Club of Arlington

The Kiwanis Club of Arlington supports many different youth activities in greater Arlington. One of these youth activities is Troop 5. The Kiwanis Club of Arlington Chartered Troop 5 in 1997. Through their generous financial support of the troop, the troop has two trailers to hold our camping equipment for the boys of the Troop. In addition to equipment, the Kiwanis Club of Arlington has provided scholarship to boys to go to the National Scout Jamboree, Summer Camp, Northern Tier High Adventure and Philmont Scout Ranch. Troop 5 is very fortunate to have active support of its Chartering Organization. The Annual Fund Raiser for the Kiwanis Club of Arlington is the Pancake Breakfast. In addition to working the event, each boy of Troop 5 sells tickets to help support the Kiwanis and the Troop.
